COMMUNITY HELP: Port Augusta Special School Teacher Dianne Humphrys, RAA Port Augusta District Representative and Port Augusta Special School Principal Anne Homes at the presentation of the $3,000 grant.PORT Augusta Special School will now be able to offer more services to its 50 students from grade reception through to year 12, thanks to a$3,000 RAA regional safety grant.

It means three volunteers will gain buslicence training to enable children with disabilities to attend road safety activities and other community events.

In addition, the school will now be able to take students to the Whyalla Road Safety Centre.

Students will partake in a bike road through a designated course and learn the importance of road rules, safety and the correct use of bicycles and riding techniquesin a fun and interactive fashion.

Port Augusta Special School Teacher Dianne Humphreys says this support will fix a constant problem that existed.

“Before it was a real juggling act but now we have the chance to expand our curriculum,” Ms Humphreys said.

Ms Humphreys says the program will help staff become more flexible in taking students to important outside-school activities such aslibrary visits and kindy gym visits.

It’s the third grant given out to a Port Augusta based organisation and RAA Port Augusta District Represnetative Roxanne Neill says it’s a rewarding program.

“It means a lot because a lot of these organisations don’t have a lot of funding and programs like these can go a long way.”

RAA Senior Manager Strategic Communications, Amanda Trainor, saysRAA is pleased to be improving safety in South Australia’s regional communities.

“The total grant pool of $52,871 has been distributed between 18 worthy projects across the state including Kangaroo Island, and will improve the safety of rural South Australian communities,” Ms Trainor said.

The next round of applications in Port Augusta take place in March 2017.
