Wollondilly MP Jai Rowell is calling on education minister Adrian Piccoli to put a second public high school in Wollondilly on the agenda. Picture: Ashleigh TullisEducation Minister Adrian Piccoli declined to say when a second high school would be built in Wollondillywhile visiting the shire last week.
Mr Piccoli gave no indication that any firm plans for a second high school even existed.
“We have no announcement to make but I am aware residents want a second high school,” he said.
“We have been aware of the issue for some time.”
Mr Piccoli said he knew many high school students needed to travel outside the shire to attend school.
“I come from regional NSW and students there have to travel. We are not ready yetto announce any specific project,” he said.
Mr Piccoli said the department needed to determine whether the best course of action was to build a new high school or to upgrade existing high schools already at capacity.
He said student demand was one of the barriers preventing a second high school being built.
He expressed concern that if a new school was built, student numbers and subject choicesat other high schools throughout the region would drop.
However, Wollondilly MP Jai Rowell saidPicton High School was about to reach capacity.
Mr Rowell hasattempted to putpressure on the state government to build a new high school in the shire and last year he asked residents to sign a petition calling for a second high school. He received thousands of responses.
Mr Rowell said a second high school was one of the two top concerns raised with him.
“There is not a week that goes by that I don’t talk to a resident about the need to build a second high school,” he said.
“Wollondilly needs a second high school to cater for the expected population growth in the shire over the next few yearsand the population increase whenWilton Junction is built.”
He said the shire was just under the population threshold to warrant a second high school but it was about to tip over that mark.
“The government needs to be on the front foot of this issue,” he said.
